Clara Barkley Dorr House

Located in the heart of Pensacola's historic district, the Clara Barkley Dorr House is a Victorian home built in 1871.

It holds a Victorian period museum within the district, across the street from the Pensacola Children’s Museum and within a few blocks of the Pensacola Art Museum, Seville Quarter, the waterfront, and the Palafox Street area.

On your next trek through the Panhandle region of Florida, make plans to explore the Clara Barkley Dorr House.

A charming and quaint museum, the Clara Barkley Dorr House is a sterling example of the post-Civil War history and architecture in the area.

Five Flags Speedway

Opened in 1953, Five Flags Speedway is a half-mile auto race track in Pensacola. The track hosts weekly local racing classes featuring Super Late Models, Pro Late Models, Modified, Superstock, Sportsmen, and Bombers, and was once the host of a Grand National.

National and regional races at the speedway include the Snowball Derby, a 300-lap Super Late Model stock car race held annually in December. Known as "America's Favorite Home Track," by Florida Panhandle locals, the track hosts races from April to December.

Fort Barrancas

Fort Barrancas

Fort Barrancas

Originally built in 1787, Fort Barrancas is a historic U.S. millitary fort located in Pensacola in the Panhandle region.

Given its historical significance, the fort, which scenically overlooks Penascola Bay, was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.

Long since out of service, Fort Barrancas is now open to the public as a visitors center of the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

Visitors may take tours of the fort, viewing brick structures, like the Water Battery, once used to protect the Penascola Navy Yard.

Gulf Breeze Zoo

Right along U.S. 98 in Pensacola, the Gulf Breeze Zoo offers 50 acres of wild adventure on the Florida Panhandle. Birds range from parrots to ostrich to waterfowl; primates include tamarins and lowland gorillas; reptiles include pythons, 500-pound Galapagos tortoises, and of course famous Florida alligators

You can feed certain animals, including giraffes – fortunately, they bend their necks down to meet you instead of you having climbing way up there. Ride the Safari Line Limited, a train that runs you around the park and offers more views of hippos, gorillas, and birds. Parking is free, as are the gulf breezes.

Gulf Islands National Seashore

FL Attractions

Gulf Islands National Seashore

A federally-designated area, the Gulf Islands National Seashore preserves portions of the Florida mainland and seven islands south of Pensacola.

It includes the Naval Live Oaks Reservation, Fort Pickens, and Fort Barrancas, as well as long stretches of quartz sand beaches and dunes.

South of Pensacola using Highway 399, you can access Fort Pickens and much of the sandy beach stretches.

Florida Highway 292 west of Pensacola provides access to Perdido Key and Perdido Key State Park, Fort Barrancas, and Big Lagoon State Park.

National Naval Aviation Museum

National Naval Aviation Museum

National Naval Aviation Museum

Featuring over 150 aircraft, the National Naval Aviation Museum is one of the most popular museums in Florida.

With over 350,000 square feet of exhibit space across 37 acres, it’s the world’s largest Naval Aviation museum. Visit soon on your trek through Pensacola and the Panhandle region.

The IMAX Naval Aviation Memorial Theatre, flight simulators, a virtual flight deck, cockpit trainers, and even the “Kiddie Hawk” play area will keep you and your family occupied for hours.

The U.S. Navy Blue Angels do practice and autograph sessions at the museum as well – it’s on the Pensacola Naval Air Station grounds, after all – so check their website or call for times.

And yes, they’ve heard all the quotes from "Top Gun."

Pensacola Bayfront Stadium

Considered one of the finest minor league stadiums in the country, Pensacola Bayfront Stadium is home to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos – an MiLB Southern League baseball team that “took off” in 2012. Check it out on your next trip to Pensacola and the Panhandle region.

Located right along the water in downtown Pensacola, it’s walking distance from the stadium to museums and attractions along the waterfront, and a series of restaurants and bars along Palafox Street nearby. Enjoy views of the bay along with great baseball action from April through September.

Pensacola International Airport

Established in 1935, the Pensacola International Airport (PNS) serves the city of Pensacola and other communities in the Florida Panhandle. Covering 1,211 acres, PNS features two runways and one 12-gate terminal.

PNS is served by passenger airlines like American, Delta, Southwest, United, and US Airways – plus cargo airline UPS Airlines. Formerly Pensacola Gulf Coast Regional Airport, PNS is owned by the City of Pensacola.

Pensacola Lighthouse & Museum

Pensacola Lighthouse & Museum

Pensacola Lighthouse & Museum

Opened in 1859 and still in use today, the Pensacola Lighthouse replaced a lighthouse built in 1824 and was the first on the Gulf Coast.

Reaching 191 feet above sea level, it’s the highest focal plane in Florida and can be seen for 27 miles. This is just one of the many treasures found in Pensacola and along the Panhandle.

The Carriage House, which houses the gift shop and visitor center, originally served as a shelter for horse-drawn carriages and related equipment, and was restored in 2012.

The Lighthouse is located just across and a few hundred feet down from the entrance to the National Naval Aviation Museum on the grounds of NAS Pensacola.

Pensacola MESS Hall

In the military, a Mess Hall is a place to eat. But here, the Mess in MESS Hall is taken literally – kids come here and “mess” around with experiments. “MESS” here in an acronym for Math, Engineering, Science, & Stuff, and it allows for enough fun to where kids forget they’re learning.

Check out the Pensacola MESS Hall on your next trip into Pensacola and the Panhandle region. The kids can design their own race track for marbles, and be sure to visit on National Pi Day (3/14) for special deals and workshops.

Pensacola Naval Air Station

Follow Blue Angels Boulevard south from Highways 297 and 173, and you’ll come to the Pensacola Naval Air Station, the largest Naval Air Station in the nation. A large part of the Pensacola culture and economy, the NAS Pensacola is home to the first lighthouse built by the US. Overall, NAS Pensacola was constructed in 1913.

Visit the Panhandle region of Florida on your next tour of the southeast and make sure you set your sights on Naval Air Station Pensacola. Once there, you'll find the Naval Education and Training Command, the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute, and the Forrest Sherman Field.

Perdido Key

Perdido Key

Perdido Key

Spanish for “lost island,” Perdido Key is a scenic community southwest of Pensacola and accessible via Highway 292.

The highly-rated beaches also feature Perdido Key State Park, Big Lagoon State Park, and Johnson Beach at Gulf Islands National Seashore.

Perdido Key is also home to the legendary Flora-Bama bar, which lies along the state line right on the Gulf shore.

This establishment holds many stories, a few stages for musicians, and a series of unique celebrations like a Martini Festival, an Interstate Mullet Toss, and the Frank Brown International Songwriters' Festival – which is kind of a big deal.

West Florida Railroad Museum

Milton’s railroad depot, replacing an earlier site from the 1880s, opened in 1909 and ceased operations in 1973. In 1989, the West Florida Railroad Museum opened here and showcases a variety of rail cars, from dining and sleeper cars to cabooses – it's a mainstay attraction in the Panhandle region.

A bridge tender’s house from a trestle and section shed are examples of outdoor items on display; inside, plenty of memorabilia as well as a gift shop. The museum is free, but is only open Fridays and Saturdays. It’s located in Milton, about 15 miles northeast of Pensacola via I-10 or U.S. 90.
