MLB Teams in Florida
The Miami Marlins & Tampa Bay Rays
Batting Practice at Tropicana Field
Major League Baseball fans in Florida have two teams to root for come spring – the Miami Marlins and the Tampa Bay Rays.
Formerly the Florida Marlins, the Miami Marlins underwent a name change before the 2012 season – they also moved into Marlins Park, their brand new stadium. Previoulsy the Marlins had played at Sun Life Stadium, sharing the venue with the Miami Dolphins. Founded in 1990, the Marlins played their first official game in April 1993 – a victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Visit during the spring or summer and be one of 37,442 fans at Marlins Park. Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach – known for their beaches and summer fun – are also nearby. The Rays are the pride of Tampa and nearby cities like Auburndale and Sarasota, seeing much success since their inception in 1998.
Playing all home games at Tropicana Field, the Tampa Bay Rays – known previously as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, dropping “Devil” from the name just before the 2008 season – compete in the East Division of the American League along with powerhouse franchises like the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees.
Tropicana Field, or simply The Trop, as it’s known locally, opened in 1998 and features a maximum seating capacity of 42,735. Make your way in from Bradenton or Dunedin on your next summer visit and check out an exciting Rays ball game.
