Florida Panhandle Recreation
Check out Tallahasee & the Emerald Coast
Gulf Islands National Seashore
Make your way into the Florida panhandle and visit cities like Tallahassee, Pensacola, and Navarre. An stunning stretch of northern Florida landscape, the panhandle is home to some cities that border the Gulf of Mexico, while others border Alabama and Georgia.
Are you looking for excellent trails for hiking and biking in the panhandle area of Florida? Look no further than the Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Recreation Area, just north of Fort Walton Beach – be sure to hike the Rocky Bayou Trail, or the Sand Pine Trail.
Southeast of this trail is the popular Dune & Forest Nature Trail, part of the Grayton Beach State Park, just west of Panama City. A quick drive further west takes you to Pensacola, where you’ll want to check out the Gulf Islands National Seashore.
If you’re in the mood for some fishing with the family, be sure to explore the expansive Choctawhatchee Bay, fed by water from the Gulf of Mexico. You’ll travel in from Defuniak Springs, set just to the north. You’ll have options for fishing, too – Hogtown Bayou is popular, and if that’s busy, be sure to cast out along Jolly Bay, or the more northern Alaqua Bayou.
Set further east is Tallahassee. Famously known as the home of Florida State University, Tallahassee has a wealth of outdoor activity making it a sterling destination. You’ll want to play a round of 18 holes at the Seminole Golf Course, and after that, head to Lake Jackson, which yields a bounty of aquatic adventures – from boating and fishing, to a hike around Lake Jackson Mounds Archeological State Park.
And when you explore the charming, bayside city of Apalachicola, you’re in store for a real treat – the Apalachicola National Forest is just to the north.
